There are many wonderful places to hike in Vieques, but sturdy shoes, drinking water, and a hat are almost always required. Don’t forget the sunscreen, too!
Tickatove is one of our favorite conservation groups on the island, and they have done a tremendous job of providing information about some of the more popular hikes, along with pictures, directions, and maps.
Watch for Comocladia dodonaea, also known as poison ash or Christmas bush. It is a tree species in the cashew family, Anacardiaceae, native to the Caribbean islands. You will find it along the trails in certain parts of the island. Our rule is to give it a wide berth, as the plant's sap and leaf surfaces contain urushiol, a toxin similar to that in poison ivy.
